Our school newspaper, Tiger Tales is
based on a program developed by AbleNet, called "The Star
Reporter". The main focus of this program is the creation of a monthly
newspaper using age-appropriate curriculum. But the question arises,
how do students with severe disabilities contribute to a newspaper? The
answer is through the use of assistive technology (AT). AT devices help
students with severe disabilities communicate, make choices and
participate. No matter how severely affected the student's
communication abilities may be, they can be an active participant in
all activites and projects when AT is utilized. Two of the devices that
we most commonly use are the Step-byStep®, and the
All-Turn-It-Spinner®. We also incorporate the PECS system and
TEACCH method into our activities. Tiger Tales has
monthly themes. For example, January's theme was "Artic Animals" and
February's theme was "Food, Culture and Tradition". We produce 10
editions per year. To raise money for supplies, we sell Tiger Tales subscriptions for $10.00 per year.
Our Star Reporter classroom is run by Tina Boaz, our Speech/Language
Pathologist and our two fantastic editors/instructional assistants,
Henrietta Black and Jackie Romero. Tina graduated from SDSU in 2000 and
holds a master's degree in communication disorders. She also works at
Vista High School.
We are excited about being able to bring Tiger Tales online!
