Fall 2004 VUSD Update

2004-05 A Year in Progress for Vista Unified

This past November 2nd provided voters throughout the nation an opportunity to voice their opinions through the election of many office holders from the local level on up to the presidency. Vista Unified was included in this national past-time as three school board vacancies were up for grabs. Seven candidates ran, and unofficially, district voters made their selection. David Hubbard and Stephen Guffanti were re-elected to their posts while Steve Lilly replaced incumbent Valarie Wade. As a new member to the Board, Dr. Lilly brings considerable experience and understanding to his educational leadership role. He spent his professional life as an educator and as a trainer of educators. Having recently retired from his position as Dean of the School of Education for Cal State San Marcos, Dr. Lilly has been responsible for developing one of the most successful and exemplary teacher and school administrator preparation programs in the State of California. He will be sworn into office along with David Hubbard and Stephen Guffanti at our regular board meeting on December 9th.

Vista Unified continues to shine as an example of excellence in education in the Arts after a recent successful Festival of the Arts which was sponsored by school and community groups on Saturday, October 23, in the new downtown Vista Village Complex. This event highlighted the efforts behind our school district and the City of Vista to work together in support of expanded educational opportunities for our youth. The event showcased the creative talent of students from kindergarten through the twelfth grade. Visual art, music, poetry, dance and theatre were included in the event for the public to watch and applaud. Along with promoting community interest and involvement with the artistic education of students, it also provided Vista Village tenants with an avenue for involvement and promotion of our new center of commerce in the North County.

With the holiday season approaching, please watch for information from your student's school regarding the days that school will be out. All schools except Foothill Oak Elementary will be closed for the entire week of Thanksgiving, from November 22nd through the 26th. During the Christmas holidays all schools will be closed from December 20 through December 31. School will resume on January 3. Please use this link http://ns2/news/Pages/2004-2005Calendars.aspx to check for specific school and grade level calendars. You may also check with the Principal's office at your child's school.

We are all looking forward to an exciting and successful year of achievement for all of our students and are confident that our community and parents will assist in making the most of this school year.

Sincerely,
Dave Cowles, Ed.D
Superintendent
