VUSD News for the Week of November 24 - 28
This week marks the beginning of the winter holiday season for our schools and community. All schools will be out this Thursday and Friday (11/27 & 28) to give families time to honor our forefathers in the celebration of Thanksgiving. Some schools have different schedules this week, so you should check with your child's school for specific information about school closing.
During this time of reflection, please keep one of our valued teachers in your thoughts, Ross Johnson. Ross is a teacher at Hannalei Elementary who was hospitalized last weekend after being broadsided in the intersection of Melrose and Longhorn Drive next to RBV High School by a driver who ran through a red light. Ross has several broken bones, but is fortunate that his injuries are no worse than they are. He is recovering at Palomar Hospital in Escondido with his wife Gloria and daughters close by. We look for his speedy recovery and return to school.
This is also a week where a number of State issues are being discussed which could have a far-reaching on our school district in the coming year. I think it is imperative for all people who have a stake in our school district to keep abreast of news about the State's plans for school funding next year. North County Times writer Erin Walsh prepared a very good summary of issues being considered in Sacramento which can be read at:

I will continue to provide additional information on budget and school matters in future updates.
Sincerely, Dave Cowles, Ed.D. Superintendent
