Students in grades 9 and 10 at VHS begin preparation for the Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs by taking "Honors" classes (except for AP European history in 10th grade, which is the first AP class offered). We highly recommend that students planning to attend 4-year universities take as many "Honors" classes as possible, to begin the most rigorous course of study offered here at VHS.
Special Support Services for Freshmen:
In order to ease the transition from middle school to our rigorous high school Honors program, we offer many support services particularly designed with Freshmen in mind. Please feel free to contact us for more information about any of these programs - and visit our Honors Home Page to see Support Services for all VHS Honors students.
Familied Curriculum:
Research shows that making connections across content areas can improve the learning experience. In 9th grade, VHS uses a team-teaching model for Honors English and Honors World History I. Furute plans include widening the "family" approach.
Individualized Four-Year Planning.
Every Honors student receives one-on-one counseling with the Honors Coordinators and the school Counselors in order to create a four-year plan, and to stratgize course selection for the full IB Diploma Program. Honors Coordinators and Counselors review these plans several times a year to be sure each Honors student is on track.
Regular Grade Checks:
On a regular basis, Honors Coordinators run grade checks for the Honors students in order to keep a close eye on student progress. If an Honors student is struggling, we collaborate with teachers, parents and the student to provide whatever support the student may need.
